Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Advocate Jacob Mudenda, is attending a high-level parliamentary conference on fostering sustainable futures and integrating climate resilience in Southern Africa.

The conference, which runs from July 9 to 11, brings together presiding officers, members, and officials from parliaments in the region, as well as climate action experts from around the world.

The conference aims to empower parliamentarians to champion initiatives that enhance climate resilience, protect environmental ecosystems, and drive sustainable green economic development in the region. Key objectives include strengthening parliamentary conservation caucuses, fostering collaborations among stakeholders, exploring climate financing mechanisms, and raising awareness about the environmental impacts of extractive industries.

Speaker Mudenda emphasized the need for a proactive stance on climate change, highlighting Zimbabwe’s efforts to develop a National Climate Policy and Draft National Adaptation Plan, which requires USD 10.3 billion to bridge the adaptation gap by 2030. He also stressed the importance of pursuing international climate finance to complement domestic resource mobilization efforts. Zimbabwe has successfully mobilized USD 50 million from the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund to combat climate change impacts.

The conference is a valuable opportunity for Zimbabwe to develop and implement effective climate adaptation strategies from a regional perspective, and Speaker Mudenda’s participation demonstrates the country’s commitment to addressing climate change through legislative action and promoting sustainable practices.
