Legislators eye tech innovation for sustainable development

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Jacob Mudenda, and President of the Senate, Hon Marble Chinomona, joined global lawmakers at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, to harness science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development and peaceful futures.

The assembly’s theme, “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation for a More Peaceful and Sustainable Future,” aligned with Zimbabwe’s goals. Zimbabwe’s Parliament had already taken steps to incorporate AI in its legislative business, following Speaker Mudenda’s attendance at the IPU Conference of the Future in Uruguay in 2023.

“We are committed to leveraging technology for economic growth and sustainable development,” said Hon. Mudenda, emphasizing Zimbabwe’s vision.

During the assembly, parliamentarians converged to discuss maximizing benefits and mitigating risks of new technologies. Zimbabwe’s lawmakers shared experiences and best practices in harnessing technology for sustainable development. Hon. Chief Mtshane Lucas Khumalo, Hon. Tsitsi Veronica Muzenda, Hon. Sengezo Tshabangu, Hon. Lusyomo Nyelele, Hon. Maureen Kademaunga, Hon. Jona Nyevera, and Hon. Tawanda Karikoga represented Zimbabwe in various IPU Standing Committees.

“The IPU Assembly provides a platform for global lawmakers to address pressing issues,” noted Hon. Chinomona.

The assembly’s outcomes are expected to transform lives in Zimbabwe and globally.

The assembly commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and discussed the Cremer-Passy Prize, recognizing outstanding parliamentarians supporting parliamentarism and human rights.

This participation underscores Zimbabwe’s dedication to leveraging technology for sustainable development, aligning with the country’s Vision 2030 goals. As Zimbabwe continues to embrace innovation, its citizens can expect improved livelihoods, enhanced service delivery, and a more prosperous future.
